the fbi received more than 2,000 tips meanwhile. susan mcginnis has the latest live from boston. >> reporter: working from a couple of thousand leads, the fbi says the range of suspects in this terror case is wide open and investigators are finding out more about how these explosions were carried out. reporter: fbi photos show remnants of what they believe is a pressure cooker used as a bomb casing in the boston marathon explosions. when used as a bomb, pressure cookers briefly contain the explosion magnifying the power of the device. >> there has been some debris recovered from some of the rooftops nearby as well as some of the debris has been embedded in some of the buildings nearby. so that gives you just a kind of a scope of the power of the blasts. >> reporter: authorities say the bomber also filled the pot with bbs and nails in order to injure as many people as possible. it worked. the shrapnel tore through limbs, forcing doctors to

perform several amputations. >> almost all of them had such severe trauma in their lower extremity that was beyond salvation. we just completed what the bomb had done. >> reporter: while the investigation continues, dozens of the injured remain hospitalized and those killed are being honored. about 1,000 people gathered in dorchester, massachusetts, to remember 8-year-old martin richard. he was the youngest victim. >> i have a 8-year-old son myself who was out there that day right before it happened, and i sympathize for the parents that are going through such a situation. >> reporter: 29-year-old krystle cambell was also killed. her mother is still in shock. >> you couldn't ask for a better daughter. i can't believe this happened. >> reporter: the third person killed was a boston university grad student. president obama arrives here tomorrow morning. he will speak at a service for the victims of this terror attack. meanwhile, marathon organizers say the boston marathon will go

on next year. in boston, susan mcginnis, back to you. >> thank you. and we are getting our first look at what one of the bombs might have looked like before it went off. check the two pictures. viewer photos sent in to whdh tv in boston show a bag next to a mailbox in front of a crowd. after the explosion the bag is gone. a bay area community is reaching out to help a victim of the bombing. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in martinez home of a 12-year- old who is still in a hospital over in boston. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. aaron hern is still in intensive care at boston children's hospital. but he is going to live. his mother posted an facebook last night saying -- on facebook last night saying the 12-year-old communicated with nods that he is okay and comfortable but frustrated without the ability to communicate. he is due for another surgery

today. he went to boston to cheer his mother as she ran the marathon. he now has shrapnel wounds to the legs. one is severe and will require more surgery and possibly even skin grafts. people here in the bay area are rallying around aaron and his family. the restaurant rocks on main in martinez hosted a special dinner also night with all the proceeds going to the hern family and say they will do it every tuesday until the family comes home. >> i'm here to support the family and this wonderful community we live in. we have amazing people here and everybody is rallying together to make sure that the herns are taken care of. >> reporter: organizers asked for $5 a plate last night. but people donated what they wanted and some people gave up to $40. aaron will be in the hospital for at least another week. the family should know a little more after his surgery today. live in martinez, anne makovec,

kpix 5. >> anne, you mentioned aaron has been able to communicate somewhat with his family. do you know what he said to them so far? >> reporter: he has been able to write down a few things asking how everybody else in the family is doing, how his family friend that went along on the trip is doing and he is also asking whether or not his mother finished the race. so still thinking about the reason why they came in the first place. >> it's so great to hear that he is on the mend. all right. anne makovec live this morning in martinez, thank you. 5:05. the fbi is looking into a poison-laced envelope that was sent by mail to a u.s. senator. it was never delivered roger wicker because routine tests at a senate mail facility determined it was tainted with ricin. investigators are not confirming suspects but missouri senator claire mccaskill says it's believed to be a person who writes often to

members of congress. 5:05. lawrence has great weather news. >> i do. if you like the sunshine and the warmer weather, less wind. that's been the big bugaboo. >> and we do. >> we do. >> we want less wind. still breezy in spots. but the winds are mentioning the atmosphere and keeping the temperatures up so not as cold outside. right now we have mostly clear skies out over the bay looking good. the temperatures now kind of bouncing around a bit because we have windy spots. 57 degrees in san francisco. 57 in oakland. and a cool 47 in santa rosa. high pressure though building in overhead. that's going to warm up the temperatures nicely around the bay area. yesterday we topped out not too badly in the upper 60s in some spots inland but today we'll head into the 70s in some spots. even some mid-60s into san francisco. much warmer weather is on the way. we'll talk about that coming up. liza battalones has traffic. >> we are going back to the live pictures of that accident that happened earlier this morning in san jose.

this is northbound 101 approaching hellyer avenue. this truck carrying a load of potted plans down a ditch partially overturned there. so expect just a minor delay getting through there. it's off to the right-hand shoulder so everything contained off to the side and all lanes are open and looks like not even a minor delay. traffic seems to be getting around it okay. north 101 in san jose approaching hellyer. the rest of the south bay commute very quiet light traffic at the 880/237 interchange in milpitas. bridge commutes looking good wide open at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights off, all lanes open across the upper deck of the bay bridge. all bart trains are on time. no delays at the golden gate bridge toll plaza. that's a look at the commute. >> thank you. we're watching some developing news right now over in hayward. police are searching for the gunman who shot a woman sleeping in her own home around 12:30.

the woman in her 20s was hit in the neck. she was conscious and taken to the hospital. . no word on the suspect but officers say it looked like someone deliberately fired into the home. we are also following developing news out of san francisco this morning. there was an intense search in the area around juvenile hall late last night. the facility is near the twin peaks gas station. officers are keeping tight- lipped about the search. but it sounds like two boys broke out of that facility around 10 p.m. five teenagers now in custody in the death of a santa clara county paramedic who was shot in the oakland hills a few weeks ago. quinn boyer died april 4 two days after being shot in the head while in his car. oakland police say the suspects have admitted to the shooting. they were arrested monday and yesterday but still no word on a motive. >> i'm deeply concerned by the fact that the persons

responsible for this man's murder range in the age of 14 to 16 years old. that is unacceptable. >> police say they followed leads about a suspicious car then found it abandoned near an oakland school. the suspects were later identified through surveillance video from near the site. investigators believe boyer was a random target. a memorial was held for him yesterday. the sheriff's department is investigating two acts of sabotage on utility equipment in southern santa clara county. underground fiberoptic cable were cut yesterday morning. it disrupted some 911 services. at&t is offering a reward in hopes of finding a culprit. also gunshots damaged several pg&e transformers and caused a hazmat leak near metcalf road. the family of saratoga teen audrie pott who killed herself after an alleged sexual assault at a party is suing for damages against the homeowners where

audrie was allegedly abused. court documents show those homeowners left their daughter home alone and unlocked the liquor cabinet. meanwhile sources tell kpix 5 the three teenaged boys arrested for the crime are back home. cam transdid not -- caltrans did not conduct tests that could have revealed problems with the bolts that failed on the new eastern span last month. the "san francisco chronicle" reports the tests were originally ordered back in 2008. caltrans also had some quality concerns with the maker of the bolts, dyson corporation out of ohio. experts believe the bolts failed because they weren't properly coated and allowed hydrogen to get inside making the bolts brittle. it's going to be a perfect day to explore pier 15 in san francisco today. >> we are expecting gorgeous weather and while you're out there you might want to check the brand-new exploratorium. doors open to the public for the first time today. let's go live to kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington with more on the grand opening.

mateo bridge where westbound traffic is fine leaving the hayward area into foster city. on the right, you can see more folks out there in the westbound direction. for the rest of the commute heading for 680, keep in mind there is roadwork this morning and you can see some of the slow traffic there on the yellow sensors. northbound 680 at north mission. three lanes are traffic shut down for construction until 6:00 this morning. that's really the only area with slow traffic. 880/237, still free and clear of any big delays. we did not have any construction overnight in the milpitas area. and all of our local transit systems are still on time no delays for bart, muni or the altamont commuter express. >> now to the birthday boy, larry. >> whoo! >> that's right. not today. tomorrow. yeah. but i won't be here for that one. schoolmates everybody has been rallying around this family. the 12-year-old is still in intensive care this morning at boston children's hospital. his mother posted an update on facebook last night saying that he is doing okay, that he has opened his eyes a couple of times and that he has communicated with nods that he is comfortable. right now he has a tube down his throat and is heavily sedated so he can't speak. they also said he is frustrated with his lack of ability to communicate. they are trying to keep him calm and rested. he will have surgery again today. he had gone to boston to cheer his mother on as she ran the marathon. he now has shrapnel wounds to the leg and one is bad requiring more surgery. and possibly skin grafts, as well. meantime, folks in the bay area are rallying around aaron and his family. this restaurant rocks on main here in martinez hosted a special dinner last night and all proceeds went to the hern family. they say they are going to do this every tuesday until the

family comes home. >> we decided to open up tonight because we're normally not open and everything is volunteer. everything is donated and so 100% for the family. >> reporter: organizers asked for $5 a plate but people donated more some up to $40. all the money goes to aaron's medical bills and travel expenses. obviously the family is having to miss work and rearrange their schedules for the fact that they are going to be there for at least another week. live in martinez, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> everyone trying to help. thank you, anne. bay area runners are also trying to help show their support for the victims. runners gathered yesterday at san mateo high school at their track for a memorial run last night. it's all part of a nationwide solidarity campaign promoted on twitter. the see jane run store in oakland's rockridge area is holding a candlelight run and vigil tomorrow night. >> the latest count now we know three killed, more than 170

injured. let's go out live to boston medical center where doctors are giving an update on their conditions. >> and that didn't happen because, you know, boston ems thinks about this and they are organized so they cannot be praised higher. >> do you think about is unique in its ability to handle such a large-scale tragedy like this? >> no, i don't think so. i think most cities have systems for this and they, you know, nothing is perfect but i think most places try to anticipate things like this. boston is unique in certain respects that we have a lot of places that have -- that are level i trauma centers and they are close to each other. that works well. >> listening to an interview in boston medical center, as they hold a press conference. some of the victims, of course, treated there. a lot of those victims so lucky because there's a huge tent right after the finish line. a lot of medical personnel there, 23, 24,000 runners and a

lot of them need hydration and help and they were just feet away so they got medical service immediately. and because of that a lot of them are alive today. >> they keep talking about how great these hospitals are in boston out they're so lucky this were there to take care of these patients. we have a birthday boy doing weather today. >> we do. >> joining us now, 5:37. >> almost birthday boy. >> into the quite. yeah. i was born the day of the san francisco earthquake. >> look at that. >> can you believe how old i am? [ laughter ] >> yes. 1906! that's amazing. we have sunshine coming our way today. it is going to warm up very nicely now over the next few days as high pressure builds in overhead. we are going to get some sunshine going and a little less wind. still it's breezy in spots this morning keeping your skies fairly clear and the temperatures a little mild. right now, we are seeing sustained winds at 20 miles per hour at sfo also into fairfield. 15 in livermore. and 12 in the napa valley. so that's helped to keep these

temperatures up a few degrees. numbers running in the 50s into oakland, also san francisco. one cool spot, 47 degrees in santa rosa. by the afternoon, though, warming trend in effect and it's going to stick around for a while now pushing up into the 70s in some of the valleys maybe 80s in a few days. we'll talk about that coming up. right now liza battalones has traffic. >> lawrence, you look very good for your age, just want you to know. for your age. asian stocks higher this morning. tokyo's nikkei rose 1%. hong kong's hang seng added a fraction. more signs the housing market is recovering. builders started work on a million new homes in march. that hasn't happened since june 2008. and it was fueled by a surge in apartment building construction but single-family home construction fell by nearly 5%. the international monetary fund now predicts global economy will grow by 3.3% this year. that's down two-tenths of a point since its january forecast. the imf says the u.s. economy will expand by a slightly smaller 1.9% while the eurozone economies were shrink slightly. back to you. >> and we understand car ownership and believe me we all know this here in san francisco but it comes with a big price tag, too, doesn't it? >> it sure does. a new report out by aaa found that owning an average sedan will drain about $9,100 a year from your wallet when you

towards the top of your screen northbound 880 is going to be slow in patches from 66th avenue approaching oakland. again all lanes are now open. that stalled a.c. transit bus is out of there so traffic will be fine now for the northbound drive heading towards the macarthur maze and the bay bridge toll plaza. in fact, over at the bay bridge, traffic is looking okay. just some very minor delay in the cash lanes. if you pay your money, traffic is great, no problems at all across the upper deck approaching treasure island. now, the san mateo bridge also checking in with very light traffic approaching the toll plaza. both this and the dumbarton bridges are great commutes towards it the peninsula. toward the silicon valley trouble-free for 880 southbound traffic looking good approaching the 237 interchange. it's also a very smooth morning for local transit still no delays for bart or the altamont commuter express. that's a look at the commute. now to frank and elizabeth. 5:50 now. in this morning's healthwatch, some new details on the effects
